An alcohol disinfectant gel is a liquid generally used to reduce the amount of pathogens. They are generally more effective at killing microorganisms and better tolerated than soap and water.
Alcohol-based versions are usually made with isopropanol, ethanol or 1-Propanol. Formulas that contain between 60 and 95% alcohol are the most effective. Although alcohol-based disinfectants kill a range of microorganisms, they do not kill spores. Some formulas contain glycerol to prevent the skin from drying out. Alcohol-free versions can be made with benzalkonium chloride or triclosan.
